Where: Gdańsk, Poland
For who: Piano Trio & Piano Quartet

Mission

The career of a chamber ensemble very often begins with success in an international music competition. We are aware of the responsibility that comes with our task and of the trust that young artists place in us.

Mission

The competition was initiated in 1997, when the city of Gdańsk celebrated its 1000th anniversary, on the day that was exactly 100 years after Johannes Brahms’ death. The works of the composer present timeless artistic value and are among the most important in all of the chamber literature.

We are waiting for musical personalities who will show the beauty of chamber music played in a spirit of partnership at the highest level and who will evoke the emotions of this music in the audience. We offer an international Jury of eminent authorities, a transparent evaluation system, consultations with the jurors after each stage and a prize pool of 18.000 €.

Join us in May 2025. Feel invited to visit Gdańsk!

About the Competition

International Johannes Brahms Chamber Music Competition in Gdańsk is currently one of the largest and most important chamber music competitions in Poland. It has also gained a significant position among similar undertakings taking place in Europe, each time attracting a great number of young chamber musicians from all over the world. Since 1997 there have been nine editions of the Competition.

Since its inception, the competition has been organised by Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk and the Chamber Music Department of its Instrumental Faculty. The Competition’s honorary patronage is taken by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and in subsequent years members of the honorary committee have also included the Gdańsk Voivode, the Pomeranian Voivode, Marshals of the Pomeranian Voivodship, and Mayors of the City of Gdańsk. The General Consulate of Germany in Gdańsk and the International Johannes Brahms Society in Hamburg has also assumed patronage of the Competition.

The Competition is subsidized by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland.

What distinguishes the Competition on the international music competition scene is undoubtedly its interesting formula, enabling ensembles to compete as:

trio: violin, cello, piano;
trio: clarinet, cello, piano;
quartet: violin, viola, cello, piano.

A very broad and varied repertoire, with which the participants have to deal in two competition stages, includes works by classical, Romantic and 20th century composers, as well as obligatory works by the Competition’s patron – Johannes Brahms. Such a combination gives the participants an opportunity to present their chamber music skills in a versatile manner, at the same time setting high artistic standards for them.

The founder and director of the Competition, starting from its first edition, was Anna Prabucka-Firlej, and in 2021 her role was taken over by Bogna Czerwińska-Szymula.
